In an age of calculators and AI, doing complex calculations in seconds seems magical. But centuries ago, Indian sages had already mastered this art through what we today call Vedic Mathematics.
Vedic Mathematics refers to a collection of techniques (or sutras) for solving mathematical problems easily and quickly. These ancient methods were rediscovered and systematised by Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaj in the early 20th century based on 16 main sutras (aphorisms) and 13 sub-sutras.
The Origins of Vedic Mathematics
Although named after the Vedas, the techniques were reconstructed by Tirthaji after a deep study of ancient Indian texts. While debates continue over whether they directly originate from the Vedas, there is no doubt that they draw heavily from India’s ancient mathematical traditions.
Tirthaji claimed that all branches of mathematics—arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus—could be solved quickly and elegantly using these simple mental formulas.
Key Sutras and Their Applications
Here are a few famous sutras that can make calculations lightning-fast:
- Ekadhikena Purvena (“By one more than the previous one”): Used in squaring numbers ending with 5.
Example: 25² = (2×3) & 25 = 625 - Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah (“All from 9 and the last from 10”): Used for rapid multiplication, especially for numbers near powers of 10.
Example: 97 × 96 = (100 – 3) × (100 – 4) = (100 – 3 – 4) and (3×4) = 9312 - Urdhva Tiryagbhyam (“Vertically and Crosswise”): A general multiplication formula that can be applied to all cases.
These techniques drastically reduce the number of steps required to solve complex problems.
Why Vedic Mathematics is Relevant Today
✅ Speed: In competitive exams like GRE, GMAT, CAT, or IIT-JEE, solving problems quickly is a game-changer.
✅ Simplicity: It makes math fun and accessible, especially for students who struggle with traditional methods.
✅ Mental Agility: It trains the mind to think in multiple ways and improves memory and focus.
✅ Creativity: Unlike mechanical methods, Vedic Math fosters flexible thinking and problem-solving.
