When I think of summer vacations, my mind instantly travels back to those golden days of childhood—days spent at my dadi or nani’s house, surrounded by laughter, love, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. For many of us, summer vacations with grandparents are not just a tradition, but a treasure trove of memories that shape who we are.
The Magic of Going to Dadi or Nani’s House
Every summer, as soon as school closed, our excitement soared. Suitcases were packed, train tickets booked, and off we went to our grandparents’ place. The journey itself was an adventure—watching the changing landscapes from the train window, sharing snacks, and playing endless games with siblings and cousins.
Arriving at Dadi’s or Nani’s house felt like entering a wonderland. There was always a warm hug waiting, a special dish simmering on the stove, and a promise of endless fun. The days were filled with mischief and laughter as we played traditional games, listened to stories from our elders, and explored every nook and cranny of the house and neighbourhood.
Cousins: The First Best Friends
Summer vacations meant reunions with cousins—our first and forever friends. Together, we created secret clubs, staged impromptu performances, and competed in friendly (and sometimes not-so-friendly!) games. We learned the art of sharing, negotiating, and forgiving, all while building bonds that have stood the test of time.
Those endless evenings spent on the terrace, sharing secrets under the stars or listening to ghost stories, are memories etched in my heart. These moments taught us the value of togetherness, teamwork, and unconditional love.

Relationship Building: The Heart of Summer
Looking back, I realise that those summer vacations were about much more than just fun and games. They were about building relationships with our grandparents, cousins, and even ourselves. The wisdom and stories shared by our elders, the camaraderie with cousins, and the simple joys of family life all contributed to our emotional growth.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to focus solely on exploring new places and ticking destinations off our bucket list. But true enrichment comes from balancing travel with nurturing relationships. Summer vacations offer the perfect opportunity to do both—explore the world outside and the world within our family.
A Balanced Approach: Exploring Places and Relationships
While discovering new destinations is exciting and broadens our horizons, revisiting our roots and spending quality time with loved ones is equally important. A balanced approach ensures that we not only collect souvenirs from our travels but also gather priceless memories with our family.
So, as you plan your next summer vacation, remember to carve out time for adventure and relationships. Visit new places and make space for those cherished trips to Dadi’s or Nani’s house. Reconnect with cousins, share stories, and create new traditions.
The True Essence of Summer Vacations
Summer vacations with grandparents are more than a break from routine—they are a celebration of family, love, and lifelong learning. By blending exploration with relationship building, we create a truly unforgettable summer.
Let’s cherish these moments, nurture our bonds, and pass on the magic of summer vacations to the next generation. After all, the best journeys are the ones that bring us closer to our roots and each other.
